Gold Coast / Brisbane South Professional Development Day

Friday, 6 February 2015

The Gold Coast / South Brisbane MTAQ workshop went off with an award winning performance from the one and only Bob Moffat. A big thanks to all the presenters and sponsors. Bill from Serrata, Tim from Griffith university.& fellow  MTAQ member Stuart from Southport SHS. Wear your new shirts with pride.

The December 2014 workshop was held at Southport yacht club which is a awesome venue in a top location with a great view.  As expected the weather was spectacular.

We started with a talk from Tim Stevens of Griffith university.  He helped many teachers increase their understanding of what Griffith offers and what we can do to help prepare the students.  In case anybody was wondering marine science counts as an acceptable level of science for university entry.

Next up we had Bob Moffat (wetpaper) and Bill Fowles (serrata) these two have forgotten more about marine than most of us will ever know.  These two took us out to the beach and showed us a bunch of activities that we can do with our students.

Tim Stevens has created an app called coastal life of south east queensland.  It has over 500 species and is an amazing app to help with identification.  Tim showed us how to use the app and most of us were very impressed and keen to use it at the beach with classes.

After a bite to eat Stuart Russell took over the stage and gave us all a insight into creating EMIís that work.  He gave us examples and we discussed the quality of the work and our expectations.

After all that hard core learning we migrated onto the balcony band had an amazing lunch overlooking millions of dollarís worth of boats.

The day went great and most teachers felt they had something that they will be using in the classroom.  We look forward to doing it again in 2015. ďBest six hours of PD Iíve ever doneĒ (stuart Russell )

Bob is claiming this is his last ever marine workshop/ conference.
